1. Smart Home IoT Systems in Malaysia

Smart home systems are gaining traction among newer homebuyers in Malaysia. A few smart home hubs are available in the Malaysian market, such as Google Nest and Xiaomi Smart Gateway.

As M&E Consultants, we have worked on various projects to implement smart home features and automation.

2. Smart Home Devices and Gadgets

There are various smart home devices and gadgets available in the market. Below is a list of devices and gadgets typically used in a smart home system.

2.1 Smart Light

These lights have the ability to change between warm and cool light temperatures. They also provide saturated bright colours. These lights are typically rated at 8 W which is very low. They are usually paired to complement dark surroundings such as home theatres.

2.2 Smart Switches

Smart switches are generally preferred over smart bulbs because individuals without a mobile device can still interface with the switch. Turning on and off lights from the convenience of your device is the biggest attraction to a smart switch.

A smart switch is typically paired with non-changing coloured lights. On the other hand, smart lights are preferred for areas with changing coloured light.

2.3 Smart Doorbells

These doorbells typically have a video function to notify the user of a visitor at the door. However, most smart doorbells have a monthly subscription fee attached to them. Careful selection must be performed to ensure the viability of the device in the absence of the subscription fee.

2.4 Smart Cameras

Smart cameras are also known as AI CCTV cameras. These cameras enable the user to set a defense perimeter. Once the defense perimeter has been breached, the camera’s alarm will set off. A notification will also be sent to the owner’s device.

2.5 Smart Locks

Smart Locks are best paired with observable keypad numbers. These devices require their batteries to be changed every 6 months. Smart locks should always be selected with a built-in video feature. Smart Locks are redundant if Smart Doorbells are provided.

2.6 Smart SOS buttons

This button sends a signal directly to the owner’s device if the button has been pressed. These are typically installed in master bedrooms, children’s rooms and elderly care homes.

2.7 Smart Door/Window Sensor

These sensors detect whether the door or window is open. They also provide a history of opened/closed windows and doors. These sensors are typically powered by batteries that require replacement every one to two years.

2.8 Smart Motion Sensor

These motion sensors are usually placed in common areas such as the living room, kitchen, corridor and staircases to turn lights on or off. They are also placed in closets or pantries to turn the light on when motion has been detected.

2.9 Smart Smoke Alarm

Many smart smoke alarms in the market also double as carbon monoxide alarm detectors. These devices are powered by batteries.

2.10 Smart Thermostat

The user can configure the maximum temperature and humidity reached before turning on the AC. The AC can also be turned on at a set period of time. These smart thermostats enable the user to view past temperature readings in the room.

2.11 Smart Air Purifier

The Smart Air Purifier turns on when Air Quality index drops below a set level.

2.12 Smart Curtains

Smart Curtains function to open and close curtains according to pre-set times.

2.13 Smart Robot Vacuum Cleaners

Modern robot vacuums tend to use LIDAR to map out the entire house route. These robot vacuums can be set to clean the house at specific times when nobody is at home.

2.14 Smart Garden Sprinklers

Smart Garden Sprinklers function to turn the garden sprinklers on or off at certain times.

2.15 Smart Soil Moisture Sensor

The Smart Soil Moisture Sensor pairs well with the Smart Garden Sprinklers. When the soil moisture sensor detects the moisture has dropped below a certain level, the garden sprinklers can turn on.
