Surge Protection Systems Overview
Surge Protection Systems are devices used to protect electrical installation from transient overvoltages, also known as power surges. They are particularly helpful for equipment with sensitive circuitries which are easily affected by transient voltages, such as computers, servers, television, hospital equipment and more.
The result of a surge may be immediate damage to the electrical device or it only may be damage that only becomes evident some time. The damages may include:
i) Bodily injury and/or loss of life
ii) Interruption to residents
iii) Interruption to productive and commercial activities
iv) Public service disruption
Types of Surge Protection Systems
Based on where they are installed, there are three types of surge protection systems:
i) Type 1 SPD: This is installed at the origin, at the Main distribution board.
ii) Type 2 SPD: This is installed at the sub-origin level, at the Sub-distribution board.
iii) Type 3 SPD: This is installed close to the protected load. Please note that Type 3 SPD should only be installed as a supplement to Type 2 SPD.
How do you know if you have SPD installed?
Best practices for the design of electrical systems include an SPD to protect the system from power surges.
According to the current edition of IET Wiring regulations BS 7671:2018 , “unless a risk assessment is carried out, protection against transient overvoltage shall be provided where the consequence caused by overvoltage could result in serious injury to, or loss of, human life; result in interruption of commercial or industrial activity; or affect a large number of co-located individuals”
